Licenciate’s Degree in Law by University of Lisbon and in Sociology by the University of Amsterdam and Doctor cum laude in Social, Cultural and Political Sciences, presently he is retired Full Professor of Sociology from University of Minho, where he was Director of Centre of Research in Social Sciences (2002-2014). Distinguished with Prize Sedas Nunes by a Internacional Jury for the best work produced in Social Sciences between 1994 and 1996 with his PhD thesis “Resistance and Adaptation. Constraints and Peasants Strategies in the Nortwest of Portugal (Porto:Afrontamento, 1998), he has (co)published about the rural-urban, development and social inequalities (class, gender and ethnical), being to highlight State and Nation (2005); Development and Socio-Spatial Assimetries (2005); Gender and Class Inequalities. The case of Enterprises in Barcelos (2006); Vidas na raia: Prostitution in border regions (2007); Social Class, Identity and Collective action (2009); Diagnosis of the Immigrant Population in the municipality of Trofa (2011); Rural and Urban Socio-Anthropology (2012); Prostitution and Traffic in Women for purposes of sexual exploitation (2013); Ethnicity, Nationalism and Racism (2013); Gypsy Social Destiny (2014); City, Housing and Participation (2015); Gender inequalities (2016); Inequalities and Gender Policies (2016).
(Co)organizer of several (inter)national congresses, he was president of the Portuguese Association of Sociology (2010-2012). Integrated member of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS. Nova_UMinho), he is currently coordinator of the research project "Ways of Life and Modes of Inhabiting: ‘Islands’ and popular neighborhoods in Porto and Braga" (FCT).

Atualmente é professor catedrático aposentado em Sociologia pela Universidade do Minho, na qual foi Diretor do Centro de Investigação em Ciências Sociais (CICS) (2002-2014). Distinguido com o Prémio Sedas Nunes pela obra “Resistir e adaptar-se. Constrangimentos e estratégias camponesas no Noroeste de Portugal”, (Porto, Afrontamento, 1998), tem (co)publicado sobre o rural-urbano, desenvolvimento e desigualdades sociais (de classe, étnicas e de género), sendo de relevar Estado e Nação (2005); Desenvolvimento e assimetrias socio-espaciais (2005); Assimetrias de Género e Classe. O caso das empresas de Barcelos (2006); Vidas na Raia: Prostituição Feminina em regiões de fronteira (2007); Classes Sociais, Identidade e Acção Colectiva (2009); Diagnóstico da População Imigrante no concelho de Trofa (2011); Socio-Antropologia Rural e Urbana (2012); Prostituição e Trafico de Mulheres para fins de exploração sexual (2013); Etnicidade, Nacionalismo e Racismo (2013); Sina Social Cigana (2014); Cidade, Habitação e Participação (2015); Desigualdades de Género (2016); Desigualdades e Políticas de Genero (2016).
